Workshop Description:
These classes are 90% hands-on, and provide in-depth training in American Clay. You will learn to plaster on actual walls as we go step-by-step through the application process: masking, priming, first coat, second coat (loma and porcelina), finish work, optional special effects, sealers, and maintenance.
These classes are particularly helpful for do-it-yourselfers new to plastering and contractors who prefer a solid grounding in basic application and finishing techniques. |

Common Questions About American Clay™
Is there any way to see your plaster on walls before buying it?
Yes! We have a showroom that displays our products. Call us or email us to arrange an appointment.
How many square feet will 50 lbs. of plaster cover?
One 50 lb. bag or bucket of American Clay Loma plaster will cover 80-120 square feet in two coats, depending on what surface it is covering. Surfaces with texture will require a thicker base coat, resulting in coverage closer to 80 square feet. On drywall prepped with a coat of American Clay Sanded Primer you’ll get approximately 200-300 square feet from 50 lbs. of plaster, although we recommend using 100 square feet for estimating purposes. Brown-coated surfaces require a slightly thicker base coat and on these surfaces, you’ll get about 80 square feet of coverage per 50 lbs. of plaster. One 50 lb. container of American Clay Porcelina will cover 150-300 square feet in one coat.
What is the Fire Rating of American Clay plaster?
NFPA Class A fire rating: highly flame resistant; with the best rating of 0 and the worst of 250:
American Clay plaster = 5
Smoke spread = 0
Smoke produced = 0
UBS Class 1
No time rating on wall, as this is a surface material.
How much waste is produced on the construction site by American Clay Earth Plasters?
Almost none! Our product can be scraped up and reused, or saved in a container for patching. Also, our products can be spread around in the soil outside without damage.
Can non-professionals apply it?
Yes! Many of our clients have never picked up a trowel before, yet they have created beautiful walls and enjoyed the process. See Product Application for the steps appropriate for the wall you are covering.
Can I paint over American Clay?
Yes. Our American Clay sealers accept standard latex paints. Unsealed walls accept casein paints and lime washes. Waxed walls and wall sealed with American Clay Black SoapFinish will not accept paint.
